In 1924 the musical activities of the working-class movement in London were organised in the London Labour Choral Union, with Rutland Boughton as Musical Advisor. Alan Bush was appointed the conductor of a local choir and subsequently Assistant Musical Advisor. 'Song to Labour' was composed by Alan Bush for this body of singers in 1926, the year of the General Strike.
