This piece was commissioned by Ross Winters in 1974 just after he had completed his studies and Alan dedicated the piece to him. It was composed for descant, treble and tenor recorders.
It was first performed by Ross Winters (recorders) with Alan Bush (piano) at Alan Bush's 75th Birthday Concert of his Compositions given by the Workers' Music Association at the Wigmore Hall, on 11 January 1976. There was a further performance by Ross Winters (recorders) and Robin Bowman (piano) at the Purcell Room, 17 June 1976 and again at the Wigmore Hall on 19 June 1983. Ross Winters and Robin Bowman recorded the Sonatina in 1981 for BBC Radio 3.
