Bust of Alan Bush by Ian Walters |
|
The Alan Bush Music Trust is embarking on a new and exciting appeal to purchase the splendid bust of Alan Bush by one of the great portrait sculptors of his day, Ian Walters, who among his many honours was awarded the Jean Masson Davidson Silver Medal for distinguished services and outstanding achievement in the art of portrait sculpture in 2006.
In the course of his long life, Ian Walters (1930-2006) made portraits of more than 30 individuals, including Tony Benn and Barbara Castle, as well as bas reliefs to commemorate among others the Tolpuddle Matyrs, the International Brigade in Spain, and the Wapping strikers of 1986. He also made busts of several leading South African ANC members such as Oliver Tambo, and the anti-apartheid churchman, Trevor Huddleston, which are now at South Africa House. Most famous, perhaps, is his full-length statue of Nelson Mandela, unveiled this summer 2007 in Parliament Square.
The Trust has just learnt that the portrait bust of Alan Bush by Ian Walters, completed in 1982, is still available. Walters approached Alan Bush sometime in 1981 and offered to do a portrait bust of him. Bush had several sittings for the bust at his home in Radlett in January 1982, which was completed soon after this. According to Yolande Shepherd-Walters, her husband liked to do portrait busts of people he thought were "interesting" and had made "an important contribution in their life-time".
We need to raise £6,500 to cover the cost of a bronze bust with a granite base. The bust will be on display in future at the Royal Academy of Music, to whom we are very grateful for their helpful cooperation. We are appealing to our Supporters to help us purchase a fine sculpture and a lasting tribute to Alan Bush. I would be grateful if you would send donations to me, Rachel O'Higgins, 7 Harding Way, Histon, Cambridge, CB24 9JH.
