This year, the Stokes-Meyer Sightreading Prize which is supported by the Alan Bush Music Trust was won by Somi Kim from South Korea, who is the official pianist for the New Zealand Opera School and has won many prizes in Auckland. In 2012 and 2013, she was the recipient of the Anne Bellam Scholarship, as well as the Patricia Pratt Scholarship in Musical Performance. Somi recently completed her Master of Music with First Class Honours with her teacher, Rae de Lisle, and is now studying for a Master of Arts in Piano Accompaniment in the Royal Academy of Music under the tutelage of Michael Dussek. Somi is a member of the 2 pianos and 8 hands ensemble, Estrella, who were the winners of the IRMT's 2011 Sonata Competition. Estrella were the winners of the 6th Pettman/Royal Over-Seas ARTS International Scholarship for a New Zealand Chamber Ensemble. As a result, Somi toured several parts of the UK over six weeks in 2012, giving 15 concerts at prestigious venues, including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. More recently, she was a semi-finalist in the Ferrier competition at the Wigmore Hall and winner of the piano accompaniment prize in the Patricia Routledge National English Song Competition at the Guildhall of Music.
Somi Kim is a most worthy winner of the 2016, Stokes-Meyer Sightreading Prize, 2016. The Trustees of the Alan Bush Music Trust wish her every success in her future career as a piano accompanist.
